Cyrus Jirongo, a former Lugari MP and minister in Daniel Moi’s government, is dead.
Jirongo was killed in a head-on crash on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai at around 3:00 am on Saturday, December 13.
Traffic police say his car collided with a bus. He died at the scene.
Jirongo rose fast in the 1990s. He led Youth for KANU ’92, a firebrand youth lobby. That role made him both feared and famous.
He translated street power into real influence. By his thirties he had wealth and clout.
He chaired AFC Leopards and stirred political coffers.
He won the Lugari parliamentary seat in 1997. He later held a cabinet role under President Moi. His voice carried in corridors of power.
But his story soured. Allegations of dodgy deals clung to him. Creditors hovered around him like vultures.
Court fights followed for years. Judges found he could not pay vast debts. A commercial court declared him bankrupt.
Bankruptcy closed off certain political avenues for him and intensified public discourse regarding his legacy. Some observers perceived a decline in his popularity.
He never quite vanished. He switched parties and staged noisy comebacks. He even aimed for the presidency more than once.
