-Second Lieutenant Cynthia Mboya, a KDF officer, was based at Gilgil Barracks.

A quiet Christmas night in Migori County turned into a scene ripped from a crime thriller.

Crimson stained a tidy bedroom floor. A bright military uniform lay crumpled. A life cut brutally short.

That was the horror that greeted police in Nyahera Village, Suna East, on Christmas Day. Second Lieutenant Cynthia Mboya, 28, a Kenya Defence Forces officer home on leave from Gilgil Barracks, was found dead in her matrimonial bedroom.

Her body lay in a pool of blood. Deep cuts marred her face. Marks around her neck hinted at strangulation. It was violent. Personal. Horrific.

It sent shockwaves through local communities and Kenya’s military ranks.

Chaotic crime scene

Police officers who first arrived shortly before dawn described a chaotic scene.

Blood spattered the bedroom floor. Doors to the house stood wide open. Two mobile phones belonging to Lieutenant Mboya were missing.

Investigators combed the house. They returned later on Christmas Day with forensic teams.

They collected key exhibits: clothing, shoes and a cap suspected to belong to her husband.

At Cool Plaza, Migori town, detectives also searched the husband’s shop. There, they recovered a panga with red stains.

The brutality of the killing has left many in shock. And the trail of evidence raised urgent questions about motive and opportunity.

Family under scrutiny

In a dramatic twist, three suspects are now in police custody, including Lt Cynthia Awuor’s husband, his mother-in-law and a brother-in-law.

The husband, 33, was taken in for questioning soon after the discovery. His account, that he returned from Migori town at around 1:00 a.m. to find the house open, is now under intense scrutiny.

Police have not yet disclosed whether he has been charged. Detectives say they are pursuing additional leads, and the motive remains unknown.
