Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has revealed one of the most private chapters of his family life: the dowry negotiations for his daughter Ngina Kenyatta.
Uhuru’s raw narration revealed a process anchored in tradition, negotiation and unexpected emotion.
Speaking during a tribute to banker Frank Ireri, Uhuru admitted he initially wanted to delay the marriage, worried that the moment was rushing ahead faster than his daughter’s readiness.
“I felt she needed more time. I wanted her to go into marriage sure of herself,” he said.
But culture waits for no one. The groom’s family had already moved, presenting their intentions through formal emissaries.
Uhuru disclosed that the late banker Frank Ireri became the unlikely hero of the moment.
The man who steadied nerves, read the room, and translated expectations into agreement.
“Frank was the bridge,” Uhuru recalled.
“He understood both families. He knew how to calm the waters. He is the one who helped us close the deal.”
Ireri’s role, he said, went beyond mediating figures on a list.
He became the buffer between tradition and the weight of the Kenyatta family name, ensuring the ceremony remained dignified, private and free from the political noise that often shadows Kenya’s former First Family.

The negotiations, Uhuru noted, were not a cursory exchange but an intricate dance: a mix of cultural pride, whispered consultations and subtle recalibrations.
“It was important that Ngina’s interests were protected,” he said.
Ngina Kenyatta is married to Alex Mwai aka Sam Jnr.
Sam Jnr is the son of tycoon Sam Mwai, a famous sports consultant and manager of Karen Country Club.
He is a graduate of Durham University in the United Kingdom.
