Drama ensued in a Kisii Law Courts on October 30, 2025, after an unqualified lawyer was nabbed while representing fake advocates.
The hearing for three accused stalled after the Senior Principal Magistrate ruled he could not give audience to the unqualified lawyer identified as Peter Ngeri Ouma.
Ngeri was representing fake advocates with no valid practising certificate to his name.
As the courtroom held its breath, reality caught up.
According to Citizen Digital, Ngeri confessed he did not possess a valid Certificate of Practice despite having applied for one.
Senior Principal Magistrate Omwansa Benard ruled:
“(To the police officers) You can take care of him (Ngeri) as he records a statement and the investigations to follow. In other words, you don’t have the audience without the certificate,” the magistrate ruled.
The three suspects had been arrested within Kisii town while masquerading as advocates and offering services to clients at cybercafés.
The three suspects were freed on KSh 50,000 bond each. Their case returns on 13 November.
The masquerade runs deep
This isn’t a one-off stunt. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has been chasing a growing tide of quacks.
In Machakos, a woman was recently nabbed for masquerading as an advocate, collecting money, draughting pleadings, and commissioning affidavits – all while unregistered.
LSK reports membership totals for over 20,000 practising advocates.
But thousands more lurk in the shadows, unauthorised, unaccountable.
In recent weeks, LSK says they arrested two in Siaya, six in Bungoma and two in Garissa for fake lawyering rings.

When impostors assume the lawyer’s gown, the consequences cut deep. Cases can be struck out. Clients lose trust. The legal system trembles.
