Editor’s note: Amani Opondo, a journalism student, discusses DP Gachagua Impeachment and the courage exhibited by the “Truthful Man”

I watched in awe on Monday evening as Riggy G thoroughly challenged all the 11 grounds levelled against him for impeachment.

Imbued with courage, DP Rigathi Gachagua further shredded the charges in an unassailable gusto when he appeared before the National Assembly the following day.

Armed with evidence against every charge, the DP proved beyond doubt that he is brave as he is intelligent.

Interestingly, the DP came armed with sound evidence, including videos, to corroborate his defence.

The videos demonstrated President William Ruto, was guilty of the “shareholder” charges levelled against him.

DP by producing evidence proved that President William Ruto had indeed signed agreements with various politicians regarding the sharing of government appointments.

Any wonder that we struggle with implementing and sustaining meritocracy in public service?

Another video also had Ruto calling out the former police boss, George Kinoti. DP Gachagua’s accusers claimed the DP had undermined the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

And the DP drove the discourse towards the ominous conclusion: If I should be impeached, I should leave together with my boss.

Riggy G’s boldness in laying bare details of Kenya Kwanza’s shareholding government is the best thing to ever happen to Kenya.

The deputy president laid bare the fact the country’s politicians are a greedy lot all in for themselves.

The latter cut political deals in the name of their communities in a bid to secure plum positions for themselves and their cronies.

While many oppressed state officers choose to go down quietly, Riggy G has chosen the acrimonious path.

It follows that the DP has lifted the lid on the fact Kenyan politics is all about self interests and little about ideology.

DP Gachagua impeachment debate in the National Assembly further showed that the House was under the control of the executive.

Demigods

Kenyans must laud Gachagua for exposing the rot in government and our political systems. This could encourage other state and public officials to speak out against corruption and bullying in government circles.

DP Riggy G had previously disclosed how Kalenjin MPs and Ruto’s personal aide had been bullying him.

Kenya is in a bad state today because of unbridled corruption and mismanagement of public resources.

What’s more, corrupt leaders in government, wallowing in narcissism, love and extol those who regard them as demigods.

Thus, for survival, many public servants seem to ignore the rot in government circles for fear of retribution.

In any case, exposing a corrupt or incompetent boss is tantamount to the proverbial belling the cat.

It follows that we have established a culture in government circles where seniors wreak havoc on their juniors with abandon.

And the juniors, in most times, keep quiet for fear of sacking and intimidation.
