Tundu Lisu: Tanzanian opposition leader holed up at German ambassador’s residence

The Tanzanian Chadema party leader Tundi Lissu revealed that on Saturday, November 10 had taken asylum at the German ambassador’s residence in Dar es Salam

He disclosed that he had been receiving frequent death threats and had to find protection first

The opposition leader who was competing with John Pombe Magufuli for the Tanzanian Presidential election said that the threats started after the election

“I received two unknown calls whose callers told me they will deal with me once and for all,” he told the media

He disclosed that after receiving the calls he went at his friends house on Saturday then on Monday moved on to the German residence

“I had to move from my home last Sunday to a friend’s home and then on Monday I went to the German (residence) seeking a temporary refuge for security reasons. Before entering the (residence), I was arrested and questioned temporarily before they released me,” Lissu said.

“We are (now) waiting for the embassy to negotiate with the government for us to leave (to go) abroad. I cannot leave in a normal way without security assurance.”

A German official in Berlin confirmed that Lissu was taking refuge at their residence

The authorities said that there were no threats against the politician
