Senators vote to uphold Sonko’s impeachment

Embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been dealt a blow after Senators voted to uphold his impeachment on Thursday night, December 17.

27 out of 45 Senators voted to uphold the motion tabled bedore the Senate by Nairobi County MCAs.

27 Senators voted ‘Yes’, 16 voted ‘No’ and two – Makueni’s Mutula Kilonzo and Nairobi’s Johnson Sakaja – abstained on all charges.

“The effect of the vote is that pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution Section 33 of the County Government Act and Standing Order No. 75 of the Senate Standing Orders, Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko of Nairobi City County stands impeached,” Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka announced after voting was concluded.

Sonko was accused of gross misconduct, violation of the constitution, crimes under national law, and abuse of office.
