Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali has spoken about violence meted on Jubilee Party legislators who were chief agents for party candidate McDonald Mariga in the just concluded Kibra by-election.
Washiali said the Jubilee Party legislators were under the mercy of God as police officers told them they had brief to guard ballot boxes only.
“The police officers told us that their responsibility was to guard ballot boxes and ballot papers. Us, we were at the mercy of God. We are lucky that we survived. The thugs who were there were big (sic),” he told PD.
Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has become the poster of violence meted on Jubilee leaders and supporters during the by-election after he was pictured engaging the youth in running battles during the voting day.
Kimili MP Didmus Barasa was also roughed up by goons who had arrived at a polling station accompanied by Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati.
Part of the violence was as a result of claims of voter bribery.
Malava MP Malulu Injedi was also injured at Mashimoni area after chaos broke out.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has since said investigations into the violence during the by-election have been launched and those found culpable with be held personally responsible.
