Newly elected US President Joe Biden on Friday, March 19 stumbled twice then fell to his knees while climbing the steps of Air Force One.
According to the video widely shared on social media, the President could be seen gripping onto the flight’s railing after loosing his steps twice and falling.
However, to prove all was well, Biden dusted himself moments after falling and gave a salute at the top of the stairs before departing to Atlanta.
The White House later issued a statement saying;
“The President is just fine and did not even require any attention from the medical team who travels with him. Nothing more than a misstep on the stairs,” a spokesperson said.
This was not the first time a US President fell while boarding Air Force One.
In 2015, Biden’s former boss Barack Obama nearly fell down the stairs while leaving the plane after returning to Washington from a golf trip in Florida.
Also, Gerald Ford took a nasty fall upon arrival in a rainy Austria in 1975.
Away from the Air Force One ‘falls’, former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also made headlines when she fell into the arms of her bodyguards during a 9/11 memorial service in 2016.
She later disclosed that she had been suffering from dehydration and pneumonia.
The 78-year-old President and Vice President Kamala Harris were headed to Atlanta to meet with Asian American community leaders in the wake of the massage parlour massacre.
The Wednesday’s shooting left at least eight people dead.
Biden expressed his sadness over the shootings in the city, of which the victims were mainly women of South Asian origin.
“While we do not yet know motive, as I said last week, we condemn in the strongest possible terms the ongoing crisis of gender-based and anti-Asian violence that has long plagued our nation,” he wrote on Twitter.
One Robert Aaron Long, 21, has since been arrested over the killings and charged with several counts of murder.
