23-year-old former world youth champion Gilbert Soet Kwemoi is dead.
According to reports, the sportsman died on Friday night, August 13 at a hospital in Mt Elgon following a short illness.

Confirming Kwemoi’s death, National Police Service coach, Isaac Kirwa said they will issue a comprehensive statement on the same later today, Saturday, August 14.
“It is true that we have lost him at a young age. He was a promising athlete. IWe are in a meeting. A statement will be issued later,” Kirwa said.
Kirwa said Kwemoi collapsed and was confirmed dead in arrival at a health facility in his area.
Kwemoi lit up the Olympic Stadium in Nanjing, China, winning gold in 1500m in 3:41.99 during the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

A year later, Kwemoi won silver for Kenya at the African Under20 Championships in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.
