Traders in Nairobi’s Gikomba market woke up to a shocker after finding a section of the market being demolished.
The demolitions meant to pave way for a road construction was conducted under police supervision.

The demolitions came just two weeks after fire razed down part of the market including the cereals and the mitumba sections opposite Gikomba Market COTU offices.
Witnesses said the fire broke out at the groceries section moments after 3am before spreading to other sections.
The incident was the fourth time the market has been engulfed in flames in this year.
A huge section of the stalls burnt down on two separate occasions in April and once in February.
In August 2019, property worth more than Ksh100 million was reduced to ashes at the market.

In June 2018, at least 15 people died while more than 60 were injured in a night fire at the same market.
