Former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi married his late wife Lena in 1950 at AIC Mission at Eldama Ravine while the two were still teachers.
Although few details about their marriage are known, the two were together for 25 years and had seven children before divorcing in 1979.
Lena left her teaching job after marriage and dedicated herself to raising her family.
Their first two kids Jennifer and Jonathan were born at Tambach Government School where the two settled after marriage.
Lena was more laid back and didn’t enjoy public limelight. So she found it hard to cope with the attention that came with Moi’s rise to vice-presidency in 1970.
In what seemed like the last nail on the coffin, a story is told of how Lena humiliated her husband at a dinner dance at Rift Valley Technical college in 1974 where then-president Jomo Kenyatta was the guest of honor.
Her being a staunch Christian, she refused to dance with Kenyatta as her husband Moi danced with Mama Ngina Kenyatta at the event.
It is said the rift between the two deepened after this incident.
Their divorce followed in 1979 where Lena was never heard of until her death in 2004.
Although Moi ruled the country for 24 years he was rarely seen with Lena in public.
During their marriage, they bore seven children namely Jonathan,Gideon, Jennifer, John Mark,Philip,Raymond,Doris and their adopted daughter June.
