However, in recent days in Kenya and beyond, a boy’s story of determination to get education despite his poverty-stricken background is being told to those in the verge of giving up in pursuit of their dreams.
Hesbon Wabwire who hails from Matayos hit headlines when he walked on foot from Busia to Kisumu County covering a distance of more than 80 km with nothing else but his calling letter to be admitted to Maseno School.
Now, it has emerged a well-wisher has come forward to assist Wabwire acquire education up to University.
“SOS people got in touch with me and the boy’s family and promised to take care of his entire education to university,” said social influencer Apuoyo Biggy in a phone interview with TUKO.co.ke.
SOS Villages in Kenya assists children from needy backgrounds and those on the brink of losing family care.
“There were a number of well-wishers who were touched and wanted to help, so many people came through,” he confirmed.
He asked well-wishers who are still calling him regarding the case to chip in other needy cases.
Wabwire scored 386 marks in 2019 KCPE, landing an admission spot at the prestigious Maseno School.
Not one to be put down by challenges, the teenager woke up dressed in his worn-out primary school uniform and trudged 87km to Maseno.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Monday, January 20 launched a door-to-door campaign which aims to have all needy candidates admitted to schools where they were called.
