Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has triggered a storm of online reaction after claiming that Nyandarua Senator John Methu hails from Todonyang in Turkana County.

In the viral video, Senator Cheruiyot asserts that he was instrumental in assisting Senator Methu immediately following the 2022 election, when Methu was first elected as the senator for Nyandarua.

“I played a pivotal role in guiding him and demonstrating how things are done,” stated Cheruiyot.

“At one time, he disclosed to me Nyandarua was his adopted home, but his origin was from Tondonyang in Turkana County,” added the MP.

The senator’s remarks come days after Methu publicly addressed President William Ruto with a pointed declaration:

“Nakuheshimu, lakini sikuogopi.”

The statement—translated as “I respect you, but I am not afraid of you”—has been perceived as a bold challenge to presidential authority, highlighting significant unease within President William Ruto’s 2022 Mt Kenya support base.

Online reactions

While the exchange underscores deeper political tensions, the public response has been notably light-hearted.

Across platforms, users transformed the “Todonyang” reference into a viral talking point, producing edited images, mock narratives and jokes depicting Methu as having been “relocated” to the arid Turkana region.

Some posts framed the remark as symbolic exile; others treated it as pure comedy, reflecting Kenya’s long-standing tradition of blending politics with humour.

Methu has not formally responded to the Todonyang remarks.
