Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have thwarted a purported robbery scheme aimed at a senior military officer in Kitengela, arresting six suspects during what authorities have characterised as a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation.

The arrests were made on Monday, March 23, after DCI officers received what they termed “credible intelligence” about an imminent attack.

According to investigators, the suspects had been under surveillance for several days, with officers monitoring their movements and preparations ahead of the planned robbery in the outskirts of Nairobi.

Police say the group arrived at the scene in two vehicles – a black Toyota Harrier and a Toyota Ractis, which was positioned nearby with a driver on standby, suggesting a planned getaway.

A female suspect is reported to have approached the residence’s main gate under the pretext of seeking access.

Detectives, who had already secured the area, moved in and arrested her at the gate before intercepting the two vehicles with the help of backup teams.

All six suspects were taken into custody without incident.

Those arrested include individuals said to have links to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), among them a serving sergeant based at Kahawa Garrison and another service member currently on interdiction.

The remaining suspects are civilians, including a mechanic reportedly attached to military facilities and other individuals from Nairobi’s Umoja area and Tala in Machakos County.

“The six suspects arrested are Charles Kiio Matata, a KDF sergeant stationed at Kahawa Garrison; David Ng’aa Mwangangi, a civilian mechanic attached to the KDF at Kahawa Barracks; Samuel Agango Odoyo, a KDF service member currently on interdiction; Alex Mumo Kisilu of Umoja; Richard Mwania Muasya of Tala; and Stella Nzuki Mweni of Umoja Inner Core. They remain in custody undergoing processing and interrogation.”

Investigators say the mix of suspects points to a coordinated network involving both military personnel and civilian accomplices.

A search conducted at the scene recovered several items believed to have been intended for use in the planned robbery.

The recovered items include military-style jungle uniforms, boots, and various tools such as a crowbar, a claw hammer, a knife, and pliers, in addition to several mobile phones.

No firearms were reported to have been recovered.

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

Detectives are attempting to determine whether the group is connected to other criminal activities or if it is part of a larger organised network.
