Lionel Messi has shared insights into his life off the pitch, speaking openly about his feelings on language, structure, and solitude.
The Argentine forward, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest, told LUZU TV he feels uncomfortable speaking in languages other than his native Spanish.
“I never liked speaking in other languages on camera,” Messi said.
He recounted a Barcelona commercial filmed for the Chinese market. Initially, he declined to record the message in Chinese.
“I told the club, ‘I’m not doing the message in Chinese; I’ll do it in Spanish,” he explained.
The club insisted.
“Then they were like, ‘No, do it in Chinese, Chinese, Chinese!” Messi said.
He eventually delivered the message in Chinese, describing the experience as
“Embarrassment more than anything.”
“I feel strange speaking; I don’t like it, and I prefer to do everything in Spanish,” he added.

Finding quiet amid chaos
Lionel Messi also spoke about his personal routines, describing a preference for quiet and structured time.
At home, the forward lives with his wife and three children.
“Sometimes the chaos at home with the three kids running all over the place ends up saturating me, and I need my moments of loneliness,” he said.
In those moments, he said he often lies down, watches television or a match, and seeks simple, uninterrupted quiet.
“I can be just lying down watching TV or a match. Nothing special, just being quiet,” he said.

Structured
Messi described himself as structured in daily life, saying small changes can affect his mood.
“I’m very structured. If I have my day organised in a certain way and something happens in the middle that isn’t planned, I’m already annoyed,” he said.
He added that even minor disruptions, such as objects being moved, can impact him.
“If someone moves something from where I left it or changes what I had planned for the day, it can already put me in a bad mood,” Messi said.
When this occurs, Messi said he processes it internally rather than communicating frustration.
“When I’m like that, I shut down. I don’t communicate it; I process it inside,” he said.

Advice, but only one rule
Lionel Messi also reflected on his approach to advice. While he generally does not give guidance, he shared one principle he follows: persistence.
“I don’t like giving advice to people, because I believe that everyone should live their own experience and their own life.
But there is one thing: never, ever give up on what you feel and what you wish for and want. Never give up and keep trying, no matter what, because in the end, this is the essence of life,” Messi said.
