1. 2017: Inauguration of Donald Trump
On Friday January 20, 2017, Donald Trump and his vice president Mike Pence are sworn is as the 45th president of the United States and 48th vice president of the United States, respectively.
The ceremony was attended by a crowd numbering between 300,000 and 600,000 people together with interdenominational prayer officials, the congress and military parade.
John Roberts, who was the Chief Justice of United States gave Trump the presidential oath. In accordance to the constitution and traditions, Trump took the presidential oath at noon. This is specified in the 20th amendment of the constitution, article 2, section 1 under clause 8.
Importantly, a number of former presidents have been inaugurated on the same day. these include; Barrack Obama 2009, Franklin Roosevelt 1945, Richard Nixon 1969, Ronald Regan, 1981 and J.F. Kennedy, 1961.
2. 1996, Yasser Arafat is elected president of Palestine
On this day in 1996, Yasir Arafat, referred to as the father of Palestine, is elected as the president of Palestine with 83% of the votes. He went down in history as the first democratically elected president of Palestine.
Arafat fought against the Israelite for 40 years during which he was termed as a terrorist and later in 1994 awarded the Nobel Peace price for working with the Israeli government to safeguard the lives of Palestinians.
3. Collin Powell sworn in as first African American secretary of state
On this day in 2001. George W. Bush appoints retired four-star general Collins Luther Powell as the secretary of state. Kenyans remember Powell at the capital Nairobi during the inauguration of South Sudan as a the youngest nation in Africa.
The statesman served until 2005 in the same capacity. He had previously served as the Air-force Commander for United States and chair of the Joint Security Council.
4. 1948,United Nations Security council Resolution 39
On this day in 1948, UNSC voted on the Kashmir crisis following the partition of India. The Pakistani government argued that India was trying to reclaim Pakistani back under Indian control leading to armed conflict.
The UN resolution allowed for diplomatic solution to the Kashmir crisis and reduced the impacts of war on both nations.
5. 1991, Sudanese Government impose Islamic Laws
On this day in 1991, the second Sudanese civil war began with the Revolutionary Command Council imposing Islamic law in the country.
The majority Islam north and majorly christian south went to war leading to a twenty years civil conflict in the country and eventually a declaration of independent South Sudan which broke away from the north.
