President Uhuru has rewarded members of the legendary Mwakigwena choir who sang the famous Wimbo wa Historia.
Each of the 14 members of the group has been allocated 3 acres of land at the Bunguni Settlement Scheme in Kwale County.
The group started out as a school choir in the late 1970’s under the tutelage of music teacher and composer Enock Ondego.
Uhuru thanked the group for its immense contribution to the country’s rich heritage through their music, adding his administration will continue supporting national heroes whose selfless service has helped shape the nation.
“ Time has come to reward those who took their time to and effort to create timeless music that shape our history,” said President Uhuru when he met the choir members at State House Mombasa Friday, September 6 .
Ondego thanked the President for the gifts, saying they touched his heart.
“What you’ve done for us today touches my heart in a great way,” he said
The group which hails from Gombatu in Kwale gained countrywide fame after composing Wimbo wa Historia which recounted the treacherous road to independence with a special emphasis arrest of the Kapenguria six in the wake of Mau Mau uprising in October 20, 1952.
