President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, January 16 met governors from Mt Kenya region in what is seen as effort to solidify support base in his backyard.

At least nine governors from the region met the president at State House Mombasa in a meeting that was also attended by Mombasa Goovernor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi, PD reports.


A source who spoke to on condition of anonymity said the president appealed to the leaders to rally support for the Building Bridges Initiative. Also, the implementation of his recent outlines on the revival of agriculture in the region and unity dominated the talks.

On Tuesday, January 14, the president announced a raft of measures to revive the milk and the entire agricultural sector, which critics of his administration have been using to rally support for alternative leadership.

Uhuru also asked the governors to shun the 2022 succession and instead concentrate on implementing the policies outlined during Tuesday’s address to the nation.

The head-of-state on Tuesday  cracked the whip by sacking Mwangi Kiunjuri from tha Agriculture docket.

Among governors present at the meeting were Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a), Kiraitu Murungi (Meru), Martin Wambora (Embu), Mutahi Kahiga (Nyeri), Nderitu Muriithi (Laikipia), Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru), Francis Kimemia (Nyandarua).

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Kiambu’s Ferdinand Waititu who are facing abuse of office charges were not represented.
