Drama ensued in Garsen, Tana River County after a woman identified as Anne Maweni took off with her daughter’s KSh 170,000 dowry.

It is reported that Maweni feared being shortchanged by her kinsmen and so disappeared with the money immediately after serving food to the guests and elders.

“During the ceremony, she is the one who served the guests and elders food, but did not join them on the table. Nobody knew what time she left ,” her sister Meilu said.

Reports indicated that efforts to reach the mother bore no fruits as she switched off her phone.

Hours after, Maweni texted her sister Meilu and asked her to finish the ceremony with a vote of thanks.

It was now the time the elders noticed the daughter’s mother had escaped with the money but decided to keep it secret untill the guests had gone so that they can delve into it.

“I was not aware of my sister’s plans, but here I was being put to task, to explain how we stole the dowry and where my sister was,” said Meilu.

The elders then, after a short meeting decided that they would report the case to the police if she doesn’t return the money. A few minutes Maweni called her sister and asked her to put her on loudspeaker.

“She asked me to put the phone on loudspeaker before revealing that the dowry ‘theft’ was a plan she had weaved with the son-in-law before the ceremony,” Meilu said.

The mother revealed that she decided to run away with all the money because the elders did not deserve even a penny.

She emotional explained how she raised her daughter on her own with no help from her late husband’s side relatives stating that that was the main reason they never deserved the money.

“After the demise of my husband, you sent me away with nothing but my daughter. You took my son away, and he later died in your hands. Then, you said that the community had no use for a girl child,” she told the elders on phone.

She disclosed that she ganged with the son-in-law on the plan to leave the elders with a bag full of wrappers instead of the the money. She explained that they swapped the bags earlier.
