A section of Mombasa County MCAs has threatened to impeach Governor Hassan Ali Joho over alleged misappropriation of public funds.

Led by Mjambere MCA Fahad Kassim, the MCAs argued that the county boss has misappropriated up to KSh 30 billion of taxpayers’ money.

“Wananchi wanaumia wakati wao walikupigia kura nyingi sana… leo hii wanadhulumika na wakati pesa zao zimetumika bilioni 31 na hatujaona maendeleo yoyote,” said Kassim.

The MCAs also accused Joho of misusing World Bank funds meant for different projects in the county, further alleging that specific individuals withing the governor’s circle are benefiting from it.

“World Bank imeweza kutupa sisi Mombasa mamilioni ya pesa ambazo zinatumika ndivyo sivyo wakati wananchi bado wanaumia kuna watu binafsi wananufaika katika uongozi wako,” Kassim added.

The Mjambere MCA said he will table a motion seeking to impeach governor Joho.

“Imebidi kufika hapo tutafanya hivi, mimi kama Fahad nitaleta impeachment motion, ikiwa itafaulu wenzangu watachangia well and good,” he added.

Joho becomes the fourth Governor in Kenya to be threatened with impeachment by MCAs this year.

In January this year, Senate upheld the then Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s impeachment after finding him guilty of three charges which were tabled before it by Kiambu County Assembly.

Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru was also placed on the ‘chopping board’ over gross violation of the Constitution abuse of office and gross misconduct.

Kirinyaga MCAs successfully voted for her removal but the Senate acquitted her after a 11-member committee led by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala found that allegations levelled against the county head were not substantiated.

Kitui MCAs are also seeking to impeach Governor Charity Ngilu over gross violation of the Constitution and the County Governments Act by failing to honour summons of the Senate.

Yesterday, a petition challenging her impeachment was thrown out by the High Court, citing lack of merit.
