Several pupils of Itithini Primary School in Makueni county shocked teachers after reported to school while drunk on Friday, February 14.
Joel Kiema the school headteacher confirmed the incident. He said that the pupils belonging to grade one, two and three arrived at school intoxicated that they couldn’t walk properly.
Kiema said investigations by teachers revealed the pupils found the liquor ‘Karubu’ in a bush on Thursday evening and shared among themselves.
“I got a report from a teacher in grade two, he told me that the pupils told him how they found a jerrican of Karubu in the bush and imbibed the brew. We had to call the parents of the kids” said Kiema.
The headteacher stated that it has not yet been established who hid the brew in the bush.
He blamed parents for the incident stating that a good number of residents have school going kids but still prepare the local brew.
“When I was posted to this school last year, I called a meeting with the parents and discussed the issue of alcohol brewing,” he said.
Kiema noted that some of the pupils were missing school since they were home helping their parents prepare the brew.
Sarah Kimanthi a resident said that lack of employment has fueled the unbridled consumption of illicit brew in the area.
She lamented a lot of men in the area spent their day in the drinking dens.
“A lot of kids have dropped out of school. Families are sleeping hungry because of these irresponsible men who only think about alcohol,” she said.
