A change in financial fortunes and the inability to adjust to the vagaries of economic doldrums might have driven award-winning gospel musician Papa Dennis to depression and ultimately death.

At his prime, the artiste was captured in a viral video counting bundles of notes he claimed were worth millions.

In another interview with a local entertainment magazine, the artiste claimed he had KSh 50 million stashed in three bank accounts in the country.

Whether it was real or just for the hype, there is no denying the musician at that time was not only rolling in big machines but his music videos were expensively produced.

Fast forward, artistes close to the fallen entertainer told of a man who in his last days was struggling to make ends meet.

It is said change of financial fortunes forced the singer to relocate from his solid rented house in Lavington and started life afresh in a room in the Pangani studio – Nairobi Records – where he allegedly jumped to his death, K24 digital reports.

According to the source who spoke to the media house, life had squeezed the artiste to the corner and reduced him to worrying about the smallest issues like his next meal.

The owner of Nairobi Records, Mash Mjukuu offered him a place in one of the rooms in the studio where he would retire for the night after a day of hustling for a meal.

Another version posits Papa Dennis’ lost hold of his lavish lifestyle after allegedly falling out with his former manager Sadat Muhindi who was financing his luxurious lifestyle.

When reached for comment, Sadat did not deny or admit falling out with the artiste.

“Yes, I have heard allegations that Dennis went broke after I left his life. I wouldn’t comment on that matter,” Sadat told K24 Digital on phone Saturday.

A report filed at Pangani Police Station by Papa Dennis’ brother, Simon Mwangi, at 1:30am Saturday, says he fell from Kirima Building near Jubilee Party headquarters, with authorities confirming Dennis’ cause of death as suicide.

The incident happened at 11:30pm Friday, February 7.

The 2018 African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) winner had earlier spent the day, and the evening in the studio said to be on the third floor of Kirima Building.

He’s said to have stormed out of the studio and headed to the topmost floor from where he took a plunge to his death.

Born Dennis Mwangi, Papa dennis grew up in Matunda Kakamega.
