Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja has been impeached.
Out of 33 Members of County Assembly (MCAs), 30 voted to oust Samboja who they accused of gross misconduct. The three MCAs who did not vote were absent.
The MCAs cited; failure to submit to the county assembly an annual report on the implementation status of the county policies and plans, failure to address the county assembly as required, misappropriation of funds and misleading the people of Taita Taveta in dissolving the County.
Also the governor was accused of failing to remit statutory deductions of KRA, NHIF, NSSF among others.
Samboja hit the headlines in July this year after he rooted for dissolution of county government to pave way for fresh elections.
“For those who will be re-elected, we will thank God; and to those who will not come back, we will also thank God. Because the Bible says we must give gratitude to God in all issues,” he said.
In a rejoinder, Samboja, through his Communication Director Dennis Onsarigo, downplayed the impeachment, terming it a joke given that he hadn’t been duly notified as required.
“We haven’t seen the motion and the constitutional provision is very clear on how an impeachment should be done.
They have not followed it. As it is, we are just hearing of it from the media.
We have given dialogue a chance but it is clear the MCAs had a hidden card. It shows they have never been genuine from the start about their intentions,” he said in a report filed by Nation.
