Machakos: Woman laid to rest after 17 years at the mortuary

A woman from Machakos, Esther Nzakwa Kitovo, who passed away in 2004 has finally been buried after lying in mortuary for 17 years.

The body of the deceased was preserved at the Machakos Funeral Home since she passed away on August 31, 2004 at the age of 93.

Her family was unable to bury their loved one for the last 16 years following land disputes that revolved in the family.

According to reports, Kitovo was the first wife of her polygamous husband who had two more wives.

The husband died in 2000 and Kitovo, according to the Kamba customs the first wife should be buried alongside her husband.

Plans had been made to have the 93-year-old laid to rest but her step son came through and halted the burial plans claiming he was the rightful owner of the matrimonio home.

The family then passed through many challenges fighting for the land in courts for seventeen year but judges could not prove Kitovo owned the land.

Fortunately, on Saturday, April 24, the deceased was laid to rest at her son’s home while probe to the land case continues.

The family performed a one hour burial ceremony and strict adherence Covid-19 protocols

“We feel relieved and we thank all who have supported us. We have cried and mourned,” one of the woman’s sons said.

This is the end of a long and tormenting period. But we are happy that this has come to an end, and a peaceful end,” another one said.
