Likoni tragedy: I cannot use witchcraft in retrieval of my wife’s and daughter’s body – John Wambua

I cannot use witchcraft to appease spirits in a bid to help in retrieval of my wife’s and daughter’s body.

This is the position of John Wambua, husband of Mariam Kigheda and daughter Amanda Mutheu who drowned at the Likoni Channel.

“I am a staunch Christian and my wife was also a staunch Christian, so we cannot go that way,” said Wambua in interview with K24.

Wambua says he has heard all manner of suggestions including going the “traditional way.” In days of yore, the elders would slaughter animals (goats, cows) and spread it into the ocean, proponents of these methods say.

Various experts including former seamen have so far weighed in on the matter saying chances of recovering the two bodies are dwindling by the day.

Moreover, some have opined the operation is perilous.

However, family spokesman Luka Mbati expressed optimism of retrieving the bodies after deployment of more experts with more advanced equipment.

“We are still hopeful that bodies will be found and they will be given to us for burial,” said Mbati.

South African divers hired by the family have since joined the Indian Navy and the Kenya Navy in the recovery mission.
