The rift between Kirinyaga MCAs and their boss Ann Waiguru continue to widen, and now the MCAs have embarked on collection of signatures seeking to dissolve the county government.
Led by Majority leader Kamau Murango, the MCAs have promised to collect up to 60,000 signatures, double the required number, to do away with Waiguru’s administration.

“We are targeting 60,000 signatures and I have already collected 1,000 from my ward. The collection of these signatures will happen in all the wards in Kirinyaga,” Murango said.
The new development came two weeks after the MCAs rejected a committee of mediators suggested by Waiguru to hold reconciliation talks with the county assembly.
The MCAs rejected the committee arguing that they were not consulted before choosing the mediators.
The ward representatives also slashed the 2020/2021 county budget by 30 percent
Waiguru said the move to slash the budget estimates is likely going to affect the county operations.
In a statement, the county head said instead of the assembly approving the estimates presented by her office, it submitted a completely new budget with a variation of over 30 percent per vote.
Waiguru insisted that the move was illegal as it goes against the requirement of Regulation 37(1) of the Public Finance (County Government) Regulations 2015 which limits the assembly variations to one percent of the ceilings.

“Apart from this being illegal, I cannot approve the specific alterations done to the budget,” she said.
