Kenya Navy on spot for ‘abandoning’ Lamu fishermen lost at sea for 17 days

Kenyans have called out the Kenya Navy for allegedly abandoning fishermen who were lost at sea for 17 days.

The fishermen who disappeared on December 8 recounted how their boat ran out of fuel and drifted, in Ziwayu area in Kilifi County.

They fed on 58 Kgs of lobster and fish they had caught for the 17 days before they were rescued by other fishermen.

But Kenyans netizens have been angered by claims of the fishermen that the Kenya Navy soldiers turned down pleas to assist them with food and water.

In a report by Citizen TV, Malik Mbwana, captain of the boat said the boat stalled after rain that was followed by a storm.

Mbwana said on the second day they were lost at sea and did not know where they were.

Henceforth they were left with no option other than subsist on raw fish and salty water.

“ On the 9th day, we were elated when we spotted a Kenya Navy boat patrolling not far from our boat. We called out for help asking them to assist us with food and water,” said Mbwana, adding:

“We even reduced our demands to just water but they refused.”

The report has angered a section of Kenyans online who have slammed the soldiers for being inhumane.
