Governor Sonko nominates Anne Kananu Mwenda to be his deputy

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has nominated Anne Kananu Mwenda to the position of Deputy Governor.

Kananu is the current Disaster Management and Coordination Chief Officer. Sonko said the decision was in line with court order and in interest of ensuring stability in the country’s capital.

Court directed Sonko to stay away from City Hall after he was taken to court over economic crimes.

“…the complexity in Nairobi became more intricate following my arraignment in court December 2019, and the subsequent bail terms that, among other things, require me, as Governor, to stay out of office until the determination of the matter,” read the letter addressed to Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

“I therefore humbly urge the Assembly to expedite the vetting process of the said nominee, for purposes of appointment, as per the provisions of the County Government Act…”

The embattled Nairobi city boss said he’ll abide by the court’s bail terms, with keen interest to ensure his absence from office does not interfere with operations of the county or service delivery to residents.

Already the appointment has stirred the internet with some legal experts arguing Sonko cannot lawfully appoint deputy governor after Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti’s ruling that barred him from accessing office.
