Governor Ferdinand Waititu impeached

The Kiambu County Assembly on Thursday, December 19 voted to impeach Governor Waititu on grounds of alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.

This is after 63 MCAs voted in support of the motion tabled by Ndenderu MCA Solomon Kinuthia who, among other issues, accused Waititu of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The motion detailed that Waititu contravened the public procurement and disposal act by allegedly influencing the award of lucrative tenders to companies associated with his immediate family and close relatives.

Waititu is also accused of hiring over 600 casuals without the involvement of the County Public Service Board before later firing them.

The MCAs  posited that this exposed the county to risk of multiple suits and loss of public funds.

Waititu is also accused of violating the Constitution of Kenya by taking away and unlawfully occupying the property of Cecilia Njoki Mbugua, a Thika widow.

The fate of the governor now lies with the Senate where he is expected to appear and defend himself from the accusations leveled against him.
