Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has clarified that Asians stranded in Nairobi, as seen in pictures widely shared on social media are just tourists.

According to a local newspaper, the government spokesperson also maintained that the foreigners who have arrived in large groups have valid documents.

“They are tourists in the country legally and some prefer travelling and staying as families,” said Oguna.

According to reports, the foreigners flew into the country a few weeks ago and were on transit to Saudi Arabia, which has put several Asian countries on the COVID-19 red list.

The foreigners were booked into various facilities in Nairobi and Machakos while a section of casual labourers were stranded in the airport having failed to pay the accommodation fee.
