Former cabinet secretary for sports, arts culture and heritage Rashid Echesa was on Friday arraigned at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport magistrate over KSh 39 billion fake government firearms tender deal.

The former CS’s lawyer told the court that he believes detaining his client won’t be of any help in investigations.

“It will not help investigations for the first respondent to be detained. In paragraph 11 your honor the investigation officer said that they recovered some documents hidden in the motor vehicles belonging to the first respondent” said Echesa’s lawyer.

“However, we say no document was ever recovered belonging to the first respondent in KCR 786H. If that’s the case, then, let the council be brave enough to attest avail a copy of an inventory,” he continued.

Echesa was arrested by DCI detectives on Thursday, February 13 where he was grilled for hours at the DCI headquarters in Kiambu.

The former CS was driving around the Nairobi Kilimani area when he was flagged down by DCI officers.
