Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has suspended all arrests by Nairobi County askaris until further notice to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

In a statement, Sonko directed Acting County Secretary Justus Kathenge to facilitate the implementation of the directive with immediate effect.

The Nairobi County boss said the move was informed by the fact operations of all courts of law have been suspended, making if difficult to arraign suspects within 24 hours as is required by the law.

“Furthermore, many suspects are held in county vehicles for long periods of time before arraignment, and that environment violates WHO guidelines on exposure to Covid-19,” said the governor.

The governor however said the departments shall remain vigilant to ensure that all the County Laws are adhered to the letter.
