A woman from Siaya County who dug her own grave 23 years ago is set to be buried in it.

Reports indicate that the lady identified as Alice Omondi started preparing her grave in 1998 after the death of her doctor husband Benard Habil Omondi.

According to sources close to Alice who passed away on January 3, she dug the grave to easier the costs of burial preparations.

She built her tomb in their family compound near her husband’s.

The late 89-year-old woman together with her later husband were blessed with five children.


According to hildah Ogutu, the first born in the family, revealed that her mother graduated as a nurse in the United Kingdom.

She further disclosed that their mother was a high class lady who never wanted embarrassment and that was why she build her own grave to avoid embarrassment.

In a separate story, a villager from Murang’a County named Samuel Karanja has started preparations for his own burial once he dies.

Karanja also known as ‘Kumenya’ which translates to ‘knowing’, dug his own grave saying that he intends to easier the costs and wants not to bother his family.

In the same funeral preparation mood, he has managed to write his own eulogy which he expects to be read at his funeral ceremony.

Kumenya speaking with Victor Kinuthia, a journalist, disclosed that he decided to write the eulogy because he knows himself pretty well than any other person does.

“I do not want to be a bother to people when I die like some other people,” he said.
