3 terror suspects arrested at KDF, Recce camps in Nairobi

Three terror suspects were arraigned in court on Monday, January 6 after they were arrested allegedly conducting surveillance at a GSU camp and a military base in Nairobi.

Two of the suspects identified as James Mburu Ikaba and Miriam Njoki, were reportedly arrested on Saturday, January 4 while taking photographs outside the GSU Recce squad camp in Ruiru.

Mburu and Njoki have since been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts with the prosecution seeking 10 days to detain them pending conclusion of investigations.

The prosecution detailed that the two, who were in a Land Cruiser vehicle, drove away when they were flagged down forcing GSU officers to open fire, shooting one of the tyres of the car.

The court heard that two Ceska pistols and 52 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspects’ house and car.

The charge sheet further detailed that out of the 52 bullets, seven of them were found in the vehicle while the other 45 and the two pistols were recovered from the suspects’ house in Marurui estate in Kiambu County.

The two suspects however denied that they tried to escape, claiming they had stopped at the area to buy food and only drove off after being asked to leave the area.

“It is suspected that the respondents were conducting surveillance at the GSU Recce Company, Ruiru for purposes of carrying out a terrorist attack,” the prosecution told the court.

The two will remain in police custody until Tuesday, January 7 when a ruling on the prosecution’s application to detain them for 10 days will be made.

The third suspect Abdinasir Abdullahi, a man of Somali-Canadian origin, was found allegedly conducting surveillance at the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Air Force Base in Eastleigh.

He is yet to be arraigned after saying he suffers from Asthma and diabetes.

Abdullahi was charged with being in the country illegally; with the court ordering that he be taken to the hospital for treatment before taking plea.
