Tanzania’s First Gentleman dies in Zanzibar after treatment for heart disease as preparations begin for his burial in Kizimkazi.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, is dead.

Ameir died at about 8am Monday, September 7, at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.

He had been receiving treatment for heart disease, Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi announced.

Ndejembi delivered the news in a sombre statement to Tanzanians.

“It is with great sadness,” he said while announcing the president’s husband’s death.

He extended condolences to President Samia, her family, Ameir’s relatives and friends.

He also conveyed sympathy to Tanzanians mourning the First Gentleman.

The announcement cast a dark shadow over the presidential family.

It also brought fresh attention to a marriage that began decades before State House.

A Private Life

Ameir largely lived outside the political spotlight surrounding his wife.

He was an agricultural officer who retired before Samia became president.

The couple married in 1978 and had four children.

They have three sons and one daughter, according to Tanzania’s official presidential biography.

Their marriage spanned Zanzibar’s political evolution and Samia’s extraordinary rise.

She became Tanzania’s first female president in March 2021.

Ameir then became the country’s first First Gentleman.

Yet the title barely changed his quiet public profile.

He rarely appeared at the centre of his wife’s political life.

Instead, he remained a private figure besides one of East Africa’s most prominent leaders.

Final Journey

Now, Ameir’s final journey is taking him back to Kizimkazi.
