From Sky-High Romance to Handcuffs: Empire State Building Proposal Stunt Ends in Arrest
Perched on a needle of steel nearly 1,500 feet above Manhattan, where the wind howls louder than traffic and a single misstep could prove fatal, Russian rooftoppers Angela Nikolau and Vanya (Ivan) Beerkus turned one of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers into an unlikely stage for love and an equally dramatic arrest.
The couple, renowned for scaling some of the world’s tallest buildings without safety ropes, stunned New Yorkers on Wednesday, July 1, after climbing the antenna spire of the Empire State Building, far beyond the observation decks open to visitors.
There, against a backdrop of glittering skyscrapers and drifting summer clouds, Beerkus dropped to one knee and proposed.
Moments earlier, the pair had unfurled a black banner bearing a message that fluttered across the Manhattan skyline: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”
The words transformed a breathtaking stunt into a public plea for peace while also amplifying a proposal that quickly ricocheted across social media and international news.
For bystanders, the spectacle was almost impossible to comprehend. Tiny black silhouettes clung to the steel mast as police helicopters circled overhead and emergency crews sealed off streets below.

The romance unfolding in the clouds was shadowed by the unmistakable reality of danger.
The daring feat ended not with applause, but with handcuffs.
The New York City Police Department said officers took the pair into custody without incident before charging them with offences including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, and criminal mischief.
Investigators are still examining how they gained access to the restricted spire, an area protected by heightened security since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Nikolau and Beerkus are no strangers to flirting with gravity.
The Russian couple rose to global prominence through their death-defying urban climbs and were the subjects of the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which chronicled a relationship forged on rooftops, cranes, and dizzying heights.
Yet even for seasoned skywalkers, Wednesday’s climb marked a breathtaking new chapter.
