Choose the People or Oppress Them’: Gachagua Demands MPs Declare Their Side on Finance Bill 2026

Posted on

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged MPs to openly state their positions on the controversial Finance Bill 2026, asserting that there can be “no neutral position” given that millions of Kenyans are struggling to make ends meet.

With lawmakers preparing to vote, Gachagua cast the moment as a test of loyalty, not to political parties, but to ordinary citizens squeezed by rising taxes, shrinking incomes, and a relentless cost of living crisis.

“Today’s vote is a defining moment for the people of the Republic of Kenya,” Gachagua said.

“Ultimately, Kenyans will discern whether their elected representatives endorse measures that further oppress them or prioritise their well-being.”

His Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has instructed all allied MPs to vote against the Bill and remain in the House to force a division, ensuring every vote is recorded.

“The people of Kenya must know who is for them and who is against them,” he said.

The remarks come amid growing public anger over taxation. Across the country, families are counting every coin before stepping into markets.

Parents are struggling to manage school fees while facing skyrocketing household bills. Small businesses, already weakened by high operating costs, are fighting to survive.

For many Kenyans, payday has become a brief stopover rather than a destination, with deductions and taxes swallowing earnings almost as soon as they arrive.

Sensing that frustration, Gachagua turned his fire on MPs who may skip the vote.

“Those members who keep away from the vote and sit on the fence must be deemed to be against the people of Kenya,” he said.

“They must make up their minds.”

The government argues the Bill is necessary to raise revenue and keep public services running.

Critics, however, say Kenyans have reached their breaking point.
