After months of waiting and speculations, Mathira MP Ragathi Gachagua has been named Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate in the forthcoming August 9 General Election.
The Kenya Kwanza Alliance settled on Gachagua after a lengthy deliberation held at Ruto’s official Karen residence in Nairobi on Saturday, May 14.
While making the announcement, Ruto described the outspoken lawmaker as a successful elected politician and businessman and a living representation of a true hustler.
The lawmaker comes from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region and his appointment is aimed to endear Ruto’s candidature to over 5.85 million electorates in the area according to the unratified Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) figures.
Gachagua emerged the best among other candidates who were being considered for the position including Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki.
Others were Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Kiambu Governor Anne Waiguru, Kandara MP Alice Wahome, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi.
The naming of the running make comes just two days before the Monday, May 16 deadline set by the electoral agency for all the presidential candidates to name their running mates.
After Ruto’s announcement, the next person of focus will be his arch political rival ODM leader Raila Odinga.
The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition presidential aspirant is expected to choose among the three candidates which were presented to him after vigorous interviews.
They are Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
