WhatsApp launches digital payments option for businesses

Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp, on Monday, June 15 launched its first digital payments feature.

The feature is currently operational in Brazil only, but the messaging service hopes to expand it to other countries across the world.

In a blog post, Facebook said that WhatsApp users in Brazil can use the messaging platform to send money or make purchases from a local business without leaving their chat.

“Payments on WhatsApp are beginning to roll out to people across Brazil beginning today and we look forward to bringing it to everyone as we go forward,” the service said.

The company also noted that WhatsApp users will not be charged for sending money or making purchases, but businesses will be charged a processing fee on par with those charged for typically credit card transactions.

Digital payments on WhatsApp will be tied to credit or debit cards to start. However, for transactions, special identification codes or fingerprint verification will be required.

According to market tracker Statistica, WhatsApp is world’s popular messaging up with more than 1.5 billion monthly users around the world.
