An Ukrainian couple has sparked reactions after holding their wedding amid the ongoing Russia – Ukraine conflict in the European country.
Yaryna Arieva and her partner Sviatoslav Fursin exchanged vows in a local church in Kyiv as the sound of air raid sirens blast their ears.
Arieva noted that even though the experience was scary, their wedding was the happiest moment of his life.
“That was very scary. It’s the happiest moment of your life, and you go out, and you hear that,” he said.
The initial plan was to get married on May 6 and celebrate at a restaurant overlooking the Dnieper River, which originates in the Valdai Hills in Russia.
However, with Russian president Vladimir Putin launching a full-blown dawn attack on their country on Thursday, Saturday 24 the couple decided to marry despite the invasion.
Following the wedding, the couple spent their first day as a married couple collecting their rifles and getting ready to defend Ukraine.
They both signed up with the Territorial Defense Forces, a branch of Ukraine’s armed forces that is comprised mostly of volunteers.
“Right now, we are here and we are doing everything we can. So there is a lot of work to do, but still, I hope everything will be OK,” Arieva said.
