President Volodymyr Zelensky has slammed Russia for hitting a maternity and children’s hospital in the city of Mariupol.
At least three people reportedly died from the air strike, Ukrainian sources say.
Referring to the attack as war crime, Zelensky said tens of people were trapped under the wreckage in an attack that has attracted international condemnation.
Clips from the aftermath of the attack shows charred walls of the children’s hospital, which appeared badly damaged.
The Mariupol city council said the strike had caused a huge damage and published footage showing burned out buildings, destroyed cars and a huge crater outside the hospital.
“The building of the medical facility where the children were treated recently is completely destroyed,” it said.
President Zelensky, speaking Russian in his latest video address, said the attack amounts to a war crime.
“What kind of a country is Russia, that it is afraid of hospitals and maternity wards and destroys them?” he posed.
Zelensky, voicing his frustration, also called on the NATO military alliance to declare a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
“Close the sky right now! Stop the killings! You have power but you seem to be losing humanity,” he said.
“Direct strike of Russian troops at the maternity hospital,” Zelensky said.
“People, children are under the wreckage. Atrocity! How much longer will the world be an accomplice ignoring terror?”
Already the White House and UK has condemned the “barbaric” use of force against innocent civilians.
