President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, February 23 slammed his deputy, William Ruto accusing him of dishing out stolen money to churches.
Speaking at the Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri, the Head of State accused DP Ruto of going around discrediting the government while giving out proceeds of corruption as donations.
Uhuru also faulted some religious leaders for being used to mislead the public after receiving alleged looted money from the deputy president.
“Church leaders should stop lying to our people. Don’t lie to our people because you’ve been given stolen money from the public coffers. Such preachers will go to hell,” Uhuru said.
The remarks sparked mixed reactions from a section of politicians allied to DP Ruto who argued that churches are not corrupt and so is the DP.
Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata stated that the church is an institution that has existed for close to 2000 years and has for over the years, shaped the world’s morality levels.
“I refuse to believe the church in Kenya is corrupt. It is an institution that has been in this world for more than 2000 years. It has shaped our morality over centuries,” Kang’ata posted.
Speaking during the same meeting, Uhuru endorsed ODM leader Raila Odinga for the presidency in the August 9 polls noting that he would support the former Prime Minister for the sake of the country’s peace.
Uhuru added that his deputy, William Ruto who has declared interest in the same seat can wait arguing that Raila has the interests of Kenyans at heart.
“An old man on a stool sees farther than a boy on a tree, let me stick with the old man who I can talk with. I appeal you to support Raila. Help him to the top. Even my friend Ruto, he can become president some day akishika line,” the Head of State said
