Trans Nzoia: Chang’aa Brewer Collapses, Dies After Cops Snatch KSh 30k From Her

A 36-year-old woman from Trans Nzoia County has died after an altercation with two police officers.

According to reports, Scholastica Maranda who is said to be a chang’aa brewer collapsed and died after the officers snatched her money from her.

The two officers from Kiminini Police Station stormed the woman’s house and made away with her purse which had KSh 30,000 in cash.

The rogue cops proceeded to rob the woman after she reportedly declined to give a KSh 1,000 bribe.

On the fateful day, Maranda was in her house on Thursday, March 31 at around 6 pm when the officers came to collect the bribe which serve as protection fees.

Police officers in the area are said to collect bribes from chang’aa brewers so as not to arrest them during crackdowns.

“I just knew the officers had come to collect a bribe as usual and would leave because my sister was a chang’aa brewer… So one of the officers grabbed the purse that contained the money my sister had received from her merry-go-round group before leaving the house,” Maranda’s sister Brenda Nekesa said.

Moments after the officers left, Maranda is said to have collapsed after which she was rushed to Solona Health Center where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“When I entered the house, I found my sister in a bad state, lying on the floor. I immediately alerted our neighbours, who helped perform first aid and we rushed her to hospital for treatment,” Nekesa added.

It still remains unclear about what led to Maranda’s death who suffered from high blood pressure and a heart problem.

“We don’t know whether or not the officer beat her up but what we know is that she had high blood pressure and was suffering from a heart problem,” Nekesa said.

Confirming the incident, Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jecinta Wesonga said investigations into the same have commenced.

“We are aware of the death. We have also established reports that two police officers from Kiminini Police Station allegedly took money from the woman, resulting in riots

“The officers have been reprimanded and we are looking into the issue to ascertain the truth,” she said.
