Top Newspaper Headlines for October 1: Uhuru allies endorse Raila for presidency, issues list of demands

The country’s top newspapers on Friday, October 1 reported that a section of Mt Kenya MPs have endorsed ODM leader Raila Odinga for the presidency come 2022.

The newspapers also widely reported on KANU chairman and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi’s entry into the 2022 presidential race.

According to the daily, police have launched investigations into the murder of a first-year student at Laikipia University who.was stabbed by a man alleged to be her roommate’s boyfriend.

According to reports, the man identified as Ezra sneaked into a private hostel located in Nyahururu and reportedly killed the young lady, Gertrude Chepkoech.

“We have opened investigations into the matter. We will also be seeking to establish the identity of the man,” Nyahururu sub-county police commander Mary Kiema said.

A cleaner working at the institution said the man had been prohibited from entering the institution after being involved in an altercation in the past.

“His girlfriend sounded the alarm, accusing the man who had travelled from Nakuru, of forcing himself into their hostel. We kicked him out and warned him never to return,” the cleaner said.

The daily reported that a Meru couple was sentenced to life imprisonment for trafficking bhang worth KSh 3.09 million.

James Muthiora, 59, alias, Karinta and his wife Fridah Karimi, 50, were handed the heavy sentence by Meru Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Thomas Muraguri.

The couple committed the offence in North Imenti in November 2018.

They were nabbed with other three suspects Timothy Kinoti Kariaci, Joseph Ekeno Ekeno, and Jacob Githae Mukunyu.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi was on Thursday, September 30 officially endorsed as KANU’s presidential candidate in the 2022 General Election.

In his speech after the endorsement, Moi vowed to fight corruption, improve the economy as well as healthcare.

“Moving forward, we have to build a sustainable and working economy; provide a foundation for wealth creation and inclusion, provide quality and affordable healthcare and ensure food security,” said Moi.

According to the daily, over 20 MPs allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta met with ODM leader Raila Odinga at a Nairobi Hotel.

Led by Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya, the leaders issues a list of demand that the ODM leader must address if elected the next president.

Kimunya said they had instructions from President Uhuru Kenyatta to work with the perennial presidential candidate.

The demands are;

  • Resource allocation based on population.
  • Equal representation in elective and appointive positions.
  • Completion of ongoing projects.
  • Peace.
  • Security.

The One Kenya Alliance (OKA) principals have hinted at reuniting with ODM leader Raila Odinga ahead of the fast-approaching 2022 General Election.

The leaders spoke during the KANU party’s national delegates’ conference held at Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi where Moi was unveiled as presidential flagbearer.

“In 2022, I see a possible merger of all of us, and we could make a post-independence party for all of us. So don’t worry about our working plan; we know each other kama waswahili wajuanavyo kwa vilemba, and we’ll not have difficulty working together,” Kalonzo said.
