Top Newspaper Headlines for March 7: Investigations Show Belgian Cryprocurrency Dealer Sent KSh 650 Million ‘Gift’ to 3 Girlfriends

The country’s top newspapers highlighted the 2022 succession politics with ODM leader Raila Odinga forming an eight-member team of political heavyweights to lead his presidential campaigns. 

The newspaper also highlighted a case where Belgian cryptocurrency dealer Merc De Mesel is said to have transferred KSh 650 million to different women within 19 months.

According to the newspaper, ODM leader Raila Odinga has picked eight perceived political heavyweights to run his campaigns across the country. 

Dubbed the Sky Team, the team brings together Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, Kieni MP Kanini Kega, Narok senator Ledama Ole Kina, Mombasa governor Hassan Joho and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. 

Others are Kitui governor Charity Ngilu, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga.

The team is tasked with strategically combating the forces of Deputy President William Ruto and his allies ahead of the August 9 General Elections.

The newspaper covered the story of Belgian cryptocurrency dealer Merc De Mesel who made headlines after transferring over KSh 1 million to his girlfriend’s bank account. 

New details have since emerged on the same indicating that within a year and eight months, Merc deposited KSh 650 million to at least three girlfriends.  

He is said to have claimed that the money was gifts.

However, the Assets Recovery Authority (ARA) argued that the Belgian is partaking in money laundering schemes and is part of a known syndicate with individuals in foreign jurisdictions.

According to the newspaper, the running mate slot in the Azimio La Umoja has led to formation of different factions within the movement. 

Raila is set to pick his running mate feom Mt Kenya region in a battle pitting Jubilee and the Party of National Unity (PNU). 

PNU has since fronted Agriculture CS Peter Munya for the post. 

A survey by Trends and Insights of Africa (TIFA) has however placed former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth on top of other hopefuls.

The Swahili publication highlighted political tension caused by Deputy President William Ruto’s claims that there are plans to rig the August 9 polls. 

Speaking in the US, the second in command made the claims urging the international community to intervene and stop such plots. 

This came a few weeks after Murang’a Women Representative Sabina Chege claimed that the August 9 elections would be stolen just like the 2017 General Elections.

The Standard 

The newspaper reported how the August 9 polls has reversed roles for top contenders; ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto.  

According to the newspaper, when Raila was in opposition, he was complaining about rigging as DP Ruto defended the electorate but now, the DP is the one complaining. 

Speaking during a meeting in the US, the DP claimed that there was a plan to rig the August 9 polls, urging the international community to intervene.
