Top Newspaper Headlines for April 5: Ruto, Mudavadi scramble for Raila ahead of 2022 vote

The country’s top newspapers on Friday, April 5 widely reported on the scramble between Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi and Deputy President William Ruto to working with former Prime minister Raila Odinga in the coming 2022 General elections.

The dailies also focused on the challenges the church is facing after the government banned social gatherings. Churches were interrupted during their Easter sunday services for disobeying the Covid-19 rules.

Daily Nation

The paper touched on how churches on Sunday,April 4 went through challenges while celebrating the Easter Sunday over the new Covid-19 protocols issued by Uhuru on Friday, March 26.

According to Daily Nation, Churches in the five Covid-19 infected counties put under lockdown suspended their services until further notice. The five counties are; Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, Nakuru, and Machakos.

However, those in the 42 other counties had to work on reducing the number of worshippers who attended the services.

Churches reported that they had drained their welfare kitty due to the loss of lives brought about by the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The paper indicated churches are not directing their income to the humanitarian support after the ban stopped it.

Those congregants who gathered to mark the Good Friday were only frustrated by police officers who disrupted the meetings.

“How can you close the churches that are praying for this nation?” PEFA Pastor Peter Ambuka asked.

The Standard

There are high chances of political changes ahead of the 2022 General elections.

According to The Standard, Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has hinted at bringing the former Prime minister Raila Odinga on board in making a new political alliance for the 2022 election.

According to Mudavadi, it will be a fresh new twist to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s succession if Raila agrees to work with him.

The Standard further noted that there was a plan hatched by state to betray the opposition chief.

The top Newspaper also reported on the possibility of Ruto working with Raila Odinga in a formation that will not please people from the Mt. Kenya region.

The Ruto-Raila alliance has been opposed by allies who have said it would be flawed with mistrust and hide and seek games.

“If Ruto decides to work with Raila, I can assure that the MT Kenya MPs supporting Ruto will abandon him. We cannot submit to such a formation,” Wangui Ngirici, Krinyaga County MP.

The Swahili newspaper reported about the public servants who have hinted at vying for public offices in the coming General elections.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has been challenged to vie for the top seat, interior PS Karanja Kibicho is reported to be eyeing for the Kirinyaga governor seat

Police spokesperson Charles Owino has said he will be vying for Siaya governorship taking over from Cornel Rasanga.

Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju has hinted at leading Siaya as it CEO and Owino is interested at Tuju’s seat.

Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya is challenge to be part of the Trans Nzoia gubernatorial seat.
