Top Newspaper Headlines for April 26: Bigwigs interested in DP’s position

The country’s top newspapers reported how Deputy President’s position has attracted a good number of hopeful candidate.

The dailies also reported on the state of affairs in India concerning the deadly Coronavirus that has caused high surge in infections and deaths.

Daily Nation

The publication reported that India has recently been recording a hike in the numbers of citizens who have been infected and died from Covid-19.

According to the daily, Hospitals in New Delhi capital had begun getting overwhelmed.

In the last 24 hours 349,691 tested positive for Covid-19 while 2,767 succumbed.

However, the country’s citizens have blamed the government for not preparing earlier enough even they noticed the high numbers.

India’s prime minister Narendra Modi requested everyone to get vaccinated against the virus stating that the pandemic had shaken the country.

The daily focused on the candidates hopeful of bagging the Deputy President’s seat in the coming General elections.

Having a good number of presidential candidates declare their interests also those who want to be deputised have stepped up with strategies to win hearts of the presidential candidates.

Previously Deputy President William Ruto’s Mt Kenya allies convened a meeting where the they commanded the DP to deputise one of them.

Here are some of those believed to be looking forward to be Ruto’s deputy, former CS Mwangi Kiunjuri, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, and former Kiambu governor William Kabogo.

Those looking forward to be deputised by Raila Odinga are, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Kakamega’s Wycliffe Oparnya, and those from the Coast region, Mombasa’s Hassan Joho and Amason Kingi of Kilifi.

People Daily

This publication focused on the 2022 succession politics aiming at the list of candidates looking forward to be deputised by top seat’s candidates.

The Mt Kenya region appears to be most coveted by the competitors but the Regions politicians are not shaken and want to maintain their presence in the presidency even after ruling in four terms since independence.

Mt Kenya politician have publicly announced that they are fully backing DP Ruto for the top seat. They however, requested Ruto to deputise one of their own.

On the other side, Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga held meetings with his allies who have declared to support him.

The Swahili newspaper highlighted a number of those infected by Covid-19 but survived to tell the tale.

The Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi while sharing his experience revealed that being infected with Covid-19 changed completely his view of life.

According to the governor, the days when he was Covid-19 positive and admitted fighting it, he understood that their was more life out of politics.

Being isolated from the world, reminded him of the unnecessary sacrifices he had made and how much his career had snatched from him.

He said that Politics had snatched freedom of thought, life, and voice making him obsessed with winning.

The governor, however, stated that since he has recovered from the virus he will now focus on the things that matter in his life.
