Top Newspaper Headlines for April 12: Ruto’s Mt Kenya allies to step down if he joins Raila

The country’s top newspapers focused on the chances of a political alliance between Deputy President William Ruto and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga ahead of next year’s General Elections.

The dailies also reported on the KSh 25 billion scandal that includes the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) which is said to have given tenders to broke firms that could not finish the projects.

People Daily

The daily wrote about the hurdles around the Ruto-Raila union ahead of 2022.

According to People Daily, various leaders are against the idea of the two grouping together for the next year’s vote.

A section of leaders from the ODM party are okay with the possible formation whereas other have shown contrary opinions.

According to John Mbadi, the ODM chairman, he was unaware of the ongoing talks between Raila and Ruto. The leader said that such talks would be taken into consideration after the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) wins.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has insisted that if President Uhuru Kenyatta betrays Raila Odinga then Ruto will be his plan B.

Daily Nation

Daily Nation reported on the possible challenges that could come in between if Raila and Ruto form the said alliance.

According to the publication, Ruto could lose massive political base he had garnered in the Central region. This is because leaders from the region are against the idea of the said alliance.

The leaders would only support the alliance if Raila agrees to support Ruto for presidency and not the other way round.

The leaders also have confidence that DP Ruto can make it to the statehouse even without Raila’s help.

The daily reported on the factors that bring about domestic violence.

According to the publication, a report by the National Crimes Research Centre (NCRC) disclosed that violence in many families are caused by men.

The NCRC further indicated that the cases of abuse had recently increased due to Covid-19 pandemic.

A recent case of abuse was that of GSU officer Hudson Wasike linked to CS Fred Matiang’i’s office who killed his wife and committed suicide.

Another problem cited from the report is the psychological challenges.  The report revealed that it is at top list among others that lead to violence in families.

The Swahili paper also focused on the challenges surrounding the rumoured Raila-Ruto alliance.

The daily wrote that the leaders from the two sides had become firm on who will vie for presidency in 2022.

According to Ruto’s allies, the DP will be the one taking over from Uhuru and they would never allow Raila to deputise him.

Oh the other side, Raila’s allies indicated that their leader will be the one vying for the top seat because he has the required experiences.
