Top Newspaper Headlines: DP Ruto turns to Coast, Mt Kenya regions in running mate search

The country’s top newspapers reported reported on Deputy President William Ruto’s search for a suitable running mate come 2022.

The dailies also reported that ODM leader Raila Odinga na his handshake partner President Uhuru Kenyatta have started talks to form a coalition ahead of the 2022 General Election.

According to the daily, over 40 MPsare worried after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that any person seeking ana elective post in 2022 must have a valid certificate.

The MPs include Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Kimani Ngujiri (Bahati), George Aladwa (Makadara), Junet Mohamed (Suna East) and Imran Okoth (Kibra).

Others are Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), Jayne Kihara (Naivasha), George Theuri (Embakasi West) and Abdullswamad Sheriff (Mvita).

Also, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed dismissed claims on Parliament’s website that he holds a Diploma in Business Management maintaining that he holds a degree.

“I already did the degree a long time ago, in fact, I will call the clerk to correct my records,” he said.

According to the daily, Uhuru and his handshake brother Raila Odinga have reportedly enter into a formal pre-election agreement as the 2022 General Election approaches.

Jubilee secretary-general Raphael Tuju, Jubilee vice-chairman David Murathe, Deputy Majority-Whip Maoka Maore and Orange Democratic Movement secretary-general Edwin Sifuna met on Thursday, June 17 to discuss details of a poaaible alliance that seeks to help them capture the top seat.

“It was a meeting of like minds to take to the next level a mechanism for a coalition agreement with ODM,” Murathe said.

Deputy President William Ruto has turned to the vote-rich Mt Kenya region and the Coast in search for a running mate.

According to the daily, the DP made thw move after leaders from the Western Region gave up in push to bag the position.

“Given the kind of support the DP has, he will definitely succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta. I don’t think we will reach a point Western will force him to pick one of us as a deputy. We also do not count in terms of numbers so we cannot push for the position,” Mumias East MP Ben Washiali said.

The Swahili publication faulted top political leaders for the spread of COVID-19 virus in Kisumu during the Madaraka Day celebrations.

The newspaper specifically took issue with Uhuru, Ruto and Raila for the high number of COVID-19 cases in the county and the Nyanza region at large since the fete was held.

The government on Thursday, June 17, announced a 7pm to 4am curfew in Kisumu and 12 other counties from the country’s western region after declaring them disease-infected counties.
